Oakland to Indy: The History of World Famous Hotboys
From Bay Area backyard popups to Midwest expansion.
Every brand has a heartbeat, a rhythm that drives it forward. For World Famous Hotboys, that rhythm was born on the streets of Oakland, California. But the best rhythms are meant to be shared.
Our journey from the Bay Area to Indianapolis isn’t just a story about expansion; it’s a story about connection. It’s about taking the specific, vibrant culture of “The Town” and finding a second home in the “Circle City.”
Roots in The Town
To understand where we’re going, you have to understand where we started. World Famous Hotboys was forged in the fire of Oakland’s culinary scene. We didn’t just want to make spicy chicken; we wanted to create a community hub. We wanted a place that felt like a skate video, sounded like a hip-hop track, and tasted like the best fried chicken you’ve ever had.
Oakland is gritty, artistic, and unapologetically itself. That’s the DNA of our brand. The graffiti art, the loud music, the focus on premium quality without the pretension—that’s all Oakland. When we opened our doors on San Pablo Ave, we weren’t just selling food; we were selling a piece of the culture we love.
Why Indy? The Circle City Connection
So, why Indianapolis? Why take a distinctively West Coast brand and plant a flag in the Midwest?
Because real recognizes real.
When looking at where to grow, we didn’t want to just hit the usual suspect cities. We saw something in Indianapolis. We saw a city on the rise, a place with a deep appreciation for community and craft, but perhaps missing that specific frequency of heat and hype that Hotboys brings.
The Midwest knows comfort food. They know fried chicken. But we knew we could bring something different—a different spice profile, a different energy. We wanted to bridge the gap between the coastal skate/street culture and the heartland’s hospitality.
Bringing the Bay to Fountain Square
Expanding to Indy wasn’t about copy-pasting a franchise. It was about translation. We brought the same halal chicken, the same rigorous frying standards, and the same proprietary spice blends that made us famous in California.
But we also brought the vibe. Walking into our Indianapolis location in Fountain Square feels like stepping into a portal. You get the same energy as our San Pablo Ave shop, but it’s embraced by the local Indy community. It’s a fusion of Bay Area swagger and Hoosier love.
Bridging Cultures Through Spice
Food is the ultimate connector. You don’t need to be from Oakland to appreciate the perfect heat level of a “Hot” Sando. You don’t need to be a skater to vibe with the art on the walls.

Our history is still being written. From the early days of testing recipes in Oakland kitchens to seeing lines wrap around the block in Indianapolis, the mission remains the same: Serve the best food, represent our culture, and bring people together.
From the Bay to the Midwest, we are World Famous. And we’re just getting started.
