Juneteenth Weekend in The Town: Reggae Royalty, Jagged Little Pill & Free Music in the Park

From Buju Banton & Stephen Marley at the Fox to a West Oakland Juneteenth blowout and a Father's Day band concert in Hayward — the 510 is loaded.

Juneteenth Weekend in The Town: Reggae Royalty, Jagged Little Pill & Free Music in the Park

Juneteenth lands on a Friday this year and The Town is treating it like the holiday it is — a West Oakland block party by day, hometown hip-hop at the Fox by night, and reggae royalty taking the same stage 24 hours later. Add a Tony-winning rock musical in Walnut Creek and a free Father’s Day band concert in Hayward, and the East Bay is running every lane this weekend. From the 510 to the 925, here’s how to move June 19-21.

✊🏾 Hella Juneteenth Festival: A Celebration of Black Culture

Friday, Jun 19 @ 12:00 PM

The Bay Area’s self-styled Juneteenth epicenter takes over Prescott Market in West Oakland (1620 18th St) on the holiday itself, running noon to 6 PM. Organized by Hella Creative, it’s a daytime block party built around music, food, art, and movement — expect a curated lineup of Black musicians and DJs, Black-owned culinary vendors, art installations, and family-friendly programming. It’s free-spirited, community-first, and a perfect way to kick off Juneteenth weekend in The Town before the night shows crank up. Grab tickets early via Eventbrite since the lineup and VIP tables tend to move fast.

The Move: Prescott Market is a quick hop from Hotboys Oakland at 1601 San Pablo Ave — swing through downtown before or after the festival to refuel without losing the day’s momentum.

🎤 DaBoyDame & Friends

Friday, Jun 19 @ 8:00 PM

Oakland’s own DaBoyDame brings a hometown hip-hop showcase to the legendary Fox Theater, with doors at 7 PM and the show at 8. Billed as ‘DaBoyDame & Friends,’ it’s a Town-rooted night of Bay Area rap on one of the most beautiful stages in the country. This is an all-ages show, and the Fox is a fully cashless venue — for an extra fee you can upgrade into the exclusive Telegraph Room before, during, and after the set. With Juneteenth landing on the same day, it’s a fitting cap to a day of Oakland celebration.

The Move: The Fox sits at 1807 Telegraph, blocks from Hotboys Oakland at 1601 San Pablo Ave — line your stomach before the show since the kitchen runs until 10 PM.

🎶 Buju Banton & Stephen Marley: Roots and Rhymes Tour

Saturday, Jun 20 @ 7:00 PM

Two reggae icons share a stage for the first time on a full-scale tour, and the Fox Theater gets one of the marquee Bay Area stops. Buju Banton and Stephen Marley headline the Roots and Rhymes Tour, with select dates featuring special guest Gramps Morgan of Grammy-winning family Morgan Heritage, while DJ Splackavelli keeps the vibes rolling between sets. Doors are at 6 PM for a 7 PM all-ages show at the cashless Fox. There’s a cause baked in too — $1 from every ticket goes to the Ghetto Youths Foundation and another $1 to the Buju Banton Foundation, both supporting youth in Jamaica.

The Move: Make a night of it in Uptown: Hotboys Oakland at 1601 San Pablo Ave is a five-minute walk from the Fox, so grab a pre-show meal before the 6 PM doors.

🎭 Jagged Little Pill: The Musical

Fri–Sun, Jun 19–21

Center REP’s production of the Tony- and Grammy-winning Broadway musical built on Alanis Morissette’s landmark album lands at Walnut Creek’s Lesher Center for a run stretching May 31 through June 28 — and this weekend hits the sweet spot. Performances unfold in the Margaret Lesher Theatre (1601 Civic Drive) with a Friday 7:30 PM show, Saturday matinee and evening at 2:30 and 7:30, and a Sunday 2:30 matinee. Driven by anthems like ‘You Oughta Know’ and ‘Ironic,’ it’s a raw, emotional ride that tackles real family struggles head-on. Single tickets are on sale now, with prices that flex from budget-friendly to premium.

The Move: The Lesher Center is right in downtown Walnut Creek — Hotboys Walnut Creek at 1394 N Main St is a short stroll away, ideal for a pre-matinee bite (kitchen open until 10 PM).

🎺 Hayward Municipal Band — Summer Concert in the Park

Sunday, Jun 21 @ 2:30 PM

Hayward kicks off its free summer concert series on Father’s Day with the Hayward Municipal Band playing the Tony Morelli Bandstand in Memorial Park, just behind the Hayward Plunge. The 2:30–4:30 PM set spans marches, pop, musicals, classics, and rock — a relaxed, all-ages afternoon made for lawn chairs, blankets, and a picnic. Best of all, it’s completely free, making it one of the easiest family wins of the weekend in the Heart of the Bay. Bring the kids, bring grandpa, and post up in the shade.

The Move: After the concert, cruise over to Hotboys Hayward at 27826 Mission Blvd — open until 10 PM — for a Father’s Day dinner to close out the weekend.
