State Fair Season Peaks: Ja Rule, River Cats & Comedy Take Over the 916

The California State Fair hits full stride while Sactown stacks baseball, stand-up, and Saturday-night shows

State Fair Season Peaks: Ja Rule, River Cats & Comedy Take Over the 916

State Fair season is peaking in the 916. From July 24 through 26, the California State Fair hits its sweet spot at Cal Expo with Ja Rule headlining free with admission, the River Cats host the Dodgers’ top farm club in their only Sacramento visit of the year, Earthquake runs four shows at Punch Line, and DJ Lex takes over Ace of Spades on Saturday night. The capital is stacked — here’s the move.

🎡 California State Fair 2026

Fri–Sun, Jul 24–26 @ 10:00 AM – 11:00 PM

The granddaddy of California summer traditions is in full swing at Cal Expo, running July 17 through August 2 — and this weekend lands right in the sweet spot. Dating back to 1854, the State Fair packs in carnival rides, blue-ribbon agricultural competitions, over-the-top fair food, and free nightly concerts on the Sky River Casino Stage, all included with admission. This weekend’s free-with-entry lineup is stacked: Ja Rule on Friday, KC & The Sunshine Band bringing the disco on Saturday, and banda legend Ezequiel Peña closing out Sunday. With 600,000+ visitors expected over 17 days, this is the biggest party in the capital all summer. Gates open 10 AM – 11 PM Friday through Sunday.

The Move: Cal Expo is a quick 10-minute shot down Exposition Blvd from Midtown — load up at Hotboys Sacramento (1115 21st St) before you brave the fairground lines, or hit it on the way home when funnel cake just didn’t cut it.

🎤 Ja Rule — Toyota Concert Series at the California State Fair

Friday, Jul 24 @ Evening Show

“Livin’ It Up” hits different under the fair lights — Ja Rule headlines the Toyota Concert Series on the Sky River Casino Stage Friday night, and the show is completely FREE with your State Fair admission ticket. The early-2000s hitmaker behind “Always on Time,” “Put It on Me,” and “Mesmerize” anchors a concert series that also brings Babyface, Keith Sweat, and Boyz II Men to Cal Expo this summer. Reserved seats and premium packages are available through Etix if you want to skip the lawn scramble, but the general vibe — carnival rides spinning behind you while Ja runs the classics — is pure 916 summer.

The Move: Pre-game the throwback set with a run to Hotboys Sacramento at 1115 21st St in Midtown — fuel up on hot chicken before heading up to Cal Expo, because fair-food prices are their own kind of pain.

⚾ Sacramento River Cats vs. Oklahoma City Comets

Fri–Sun, Jul 24–26 @ 6:45 PM Fri / 6:37 PM Sat / 1:05 PM Sun

The Giants-Dodgers rivalry goes Triple-A as the River Cats host the Oklahoma City Comets — the Dodgers’ top affiliate — in their only Sacramento visit of the 2026 season. The six-game series wraps up this weekend at Sutter Health Park with Friday (6:45 PM) and Saturday (6:37 PM) night games under the lights and a Sunday afternoon finale at 1:05 PM. River Cats games are one of the best cheap-night-out plays in the region: riverfront ballpark, fireworks-friendly summer nights, and future big-leaguers on both rosters. With OKC not coming back this year, this is your one shot at the NorCal-SoCal farm-system grudge match.

The Move: Sutter Health Park sits just over the Tower Bridge from downtown — grab Hotboys Sacramento (1115 21st St, Midtown) on your way to West Sac and roll into the ballpark already winning.

😂 Earthquake at Punch Line Comedy Club

Fri & Sat, Jul 24–25 @ 7:00 PM & 9:30 PM

Comedy heavyweight Earthquake — the Netflix “Legendary” special standout, “Everybody’s in L.A.” regular, and one of the most reliable killers in stand-up — sets up shop at Punch Line Comedy Club for a weekend residency. He’s running two shows a night Friday and Saturday (7:00 PM and 9:30 PM) at the Arden Way club, Sacramento’s premier stand-up room. It’s an 18+ show with a two-beverage minimum, and with a comic this seasoned in a room this intimate, the late shows tend to get loose. Tickets start around $67 and Punch Line runs tend to sell through, so don’t sleep.

The Move: Punch Line is up on Arden Way, an easy 10-minute drive from Midtown — make Hotboys Sacramento (1115 21st St) your pre-show dinner move so the two-drink minimum is the only thing you’re buying at the club.

🎧 DJ Lex — Jump In The Water Tour

Saturday, Jul 25 @ 7:00 PM

DJ Lex brings the Jump In The Water Tour to Ace of Spades on Saturday night, taking over Sacramento’s flagship live-music room on the R Street Corridor. The 1,000-cap venue at 1417 R Street is the beating heart of the city’s concert scene — close quarters, big sound, and a crowd that shows up ready to move. Doors-to-lights this is a proper Saturday-night dance floor situation, with tickets starting around $59. Pair it with dinner in the R Street Corridor and you’ve got a full Midtown night out.

The Move: Ace of Spades is only about six blocks from Hotboys Sacramento at 1115 21st St — walkable in Midtown. Eat first, then stroll over to R Street with zero parking stress.

The Hotboys Connection

Ja Rule running the classics under the fair lights at Cal Expo, the River Cats settling the NorCal-SoCal farm feud across the river, Earthquake leveling Punch Line two shows a night, and DJ Lex packing the floor at Ace of Spades — the 916 is running full throttle July 24 through 26. And Hotboys Sacramento sits right in the middle of it all.

  • Sacramento: 1115 21st St, Sacramento, CA 95811 — open 9am–10pm Mon–Wed. Whether you’re heading up Exposition Blvd for the midway, crossing Tower Bridge for first pitch, driving up Arden for the late show, or strolling six blocks to R Street, we’re right here in Midtown and ready for you.

State Fair season is peaking, Sactown — grab the hot chicken and go get it all. 🔥
